Robert Eko, 97, Remembered for His Legacy of Hard Work

Eko’s early years were spent in Rochester, where he grew up alongside his siblings, Lorraine, Lucille, and Johnny. His formative summers on his grandparents’ farm in Lincoln Creek Valley instilled in him a strong work ethic that would define his life. After graduating from Rochester High School, Eko served his country in the U.S. Army for a brief period, demonstrating his dedication to service.

In 1959, Robert married the love of his life, Peggy Lynette, and together they created a life filled with love and adventure on their 20-acre property atop Davis Hill in Centralia. Here, they built their home, a barn, and expansive gardens, raising quarter horses and contributing to the local culture.

Eko was not just a family man; he was also a proud member of the Sheriff’s Posse and spent many years in the logging industry as a high climber, tackling trees of impressive heights. Later, he transitioned to a successful career at the Centralia Coal Mine. His commitment to his work and community never waned, as he continued high-climbing trees until the age of 86 and maintained his independence well into his 90s.

Known for his spirit and endurance, Robert lived a vibrant life, often seen weed-eating sidehills at 95 and enjoying the loyal companionship of his dog, Tucker. His dedication to hard work and love for life have left an indelible mark on those who knew him.

Robert is survived by his brother, Johnny (Kathy), his children, Kimberly (Mike), Kristy (Chris), and Brian (Leanne), as well as his cherished grandchildren, Jake and Emma. He was preceded in death by his wife, Peggy, who was his lifelong partner and friend.

The community mourns his loss while celebrating the rich legacy he leaves behind. His story is a reminder of the resilience and strength of the human spirit.
