UPDATE: A Rocky Mount man has been charged with attempted murder after his girlfriend was shot multiple times on Saturday, October 21, 2023, in a home near Whitakers, N.C. The Edgecombe County Sheriff’s Office reports that the incident sparked urgent calls to law enforcement, leading to a rapid response from deputies.
The shooting occurred in the 10000 block of Speights Chapel Road, just northeast of Whitakers. Initial reports indicated a dispute at the residence, prompting deputies to rush to the scene. While en route, authorities received a second call confirming that a female had been shot.
Upon arrival, deputies discovered the victim suffering from multiple gunshot wounds. First responders provided immediate assistance until the woman was transported to ECU Health Medical Center in Greenville for treatment. As of now, no updates on her condition have been released.
Through their investigation, deputies identified the suspect as Hayward Mann, aged 49, who had fled the scene. Authorities quickly tracked Mann down and apprehended him without further incident. A firearm was recovered at the time of his arrest.
Mann is now facing serious charges, including felony attempted first-degree murder. He has been held without bond at the Edgecombe County Detention Center and is scheduled to appear in district court on Wednesday morning at the Edgecombe County Courthouse in Tarboro.
