Thanksgiving Travel Surge Begins: 81 Million Expected Nationwide

UPDATE: The Thanksgiving travel rush is officially underway, with forecasts indicating that over 81 million people will travel at least 50 miles from home this holiday season. AAA reports that this could be one of the busiest travel periods in years, with 73 million travelers expected to hit the roads.

At Buffalo Niagara International Airport, the surge had yet to fully manifest as of Saturday evening. Travelers reported a calm atmosphere, despite the looming influx. “It seems pretty normal, like when I flew home for Christmas,” shared Ethan Mcnish-Heider, a Niagara University student heading home for the holidays. Departure boards indicated minimal delays, and security lines remained short, providing a sense of relief for many.

Another traveler, Simman Mangat, expressed his surprise at the lack of chaos, stating, “I was worried it would be busier, so I came, like, three hours ahead of time, but I was pleasantly surprised to see that it’s not that crazy.”

However, caution still lingers among some passengers. Recent travel disruptions linked to a federal government shutdown had raised concerns. “I waited until Tuesday to get my ticket,” said Carol Foster. “With the government shutdown, I was worried that my flight would take off on time,” she added, reflecting the anxiety many feel during this peak travel season.

With the government back in operation and the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) lifting restrictions, airlines have resumed normal operations. The FAA has also warned that Tuesday could be the busiest travel day in 15 years, intensifying the urgency for travelers to plan accordingly.

As the Thanksgiving holiday approaches, travelers are advised to stay informed and allow extra time for their journeys. With millions preparing to gather with family and friends, the importance of timely travel cannot be overstated.
