Thousands Celebrate Thanksgiving Spirit at Solano Turkey Trot

UPDATE: Over 2,800 participants filled the streets of Solano College for the annual Solano Turkey Trot on November 23, 2023, a festive event combining fitness and fun just in time for Thanksgiving. Runners of all ages donned creative costumes, including turkeys, Super Mario, and even inflatable characters, making this year’s event a vibrant celebration of community spirit.

This year marks the 17th edition of the Turkey Trot, organized by Medic Ambulance and Fleet Feet Vacaville. Participants ranged from serious athletes to families looking to enjoy a unique holiday tradition. “It’s like throwing a big party on Thanksgiving,” said Carol Gilpin, race organizer and owner of Fleet Feet Vacaville, who received heartfelt thanks from attendees during the event.

Among the standout participants was Joel Canalas, who traveled from San Jose dressed as Super Mario alongside an inflatable Yoshi. He remarked, “I decided to dress up like this last night… it was fun having kids come up to me for pictures.” His enthusiasm exemplified the joyous atmosphere that enveloped the race.

Not only did the event showcase fun costumes, but it also highlighted athletic achievement. Jordan Kurtz claimed victory in the 10K race with an impressive time of 31 minutes and 3 seconds, potentially setting a new course record. “It’s easy to do this race on Thanksgiving because Carol does such a great job organizing,” Kurtz said, praising the scenic course and community participation.

In the 5K race, Jonathan Charlesworth from San Francisco secured first place, enjoying the fast course and festive atmosphere. “It gets you into the Thanksgiving spirit,” he said, noting the array of turkey hats worn by participants.

The Turkey Trot also served as a platform for community engagement, with local sponsors like Meals on Wheels and Salvation Army of Solano receiving recognition for their support. Dr. Chris Claus, a returning participant, won the costume contest dressed as a hand turkey, emphasizing the event’s family-friendly nature. “It brings out everyone—dogs, kids, everyone,” he remarked.

Young participants like 7-year-old Gianna South, who ran her first race, were equally inspired. She proudly displayed her medal, excitedly sharing her experience of meeting characters like Mario and Buddy the Elf.

As the race concluded, participants left with not just medals but also cherished memories and a sense of community. The Solano Turkey Trot continues to be a beloved tradition, blending fitness with festive spirit, and leaving everyone eager for next year’s event.

With the holiday season in full swing, the Solano Turkey Trot not only celebrated athleticism but also fostered connections among friends and families, making it a must-attend event for the Thanksgiving weekend.
