UPDATE: A stunning 17-foot balsam fir from Turck’s Trees in Litchfield, Minnesota, has just arrived at the State Capitol, ready to be transformed into this year’s Capitol Christmas tree. The tree was delivered earlier this week and is set for decoration on Monday, marking a significant moment for the local community.
This delivery comes as part of a cherished Minnesota tradition, with Turck’s Trees proudly earning this honor after winning the grand champion title at the Minnesota State Fair earlier this year. According to a news release from the farm, this is the first time Turck’s Trees has been selected for this prestigious role.
The balsam fir, known for its rich green needles and natural conical shape, was officially set up in the rotunda by Capitol staff on Tuesday, allowing the public to view it well beyond Christmas. Notably, this variety is recognized as the most fragrant among all Christmas tree types, enhancing the festive atmosphere in St. Paul.
Turck’s Trees, owned by Joan and Steve Turck, has deep roots in the community, having been family-operated since 1875. The farm began planting Christmas trees in 1981 and has been selling them for over 35 years, boasting around 100 acres of Christmas and landscape trees. The fourth, fifth, and sixth generations of the Turck family are actively involved, continuing the legacy of quality tree farming.
The selection process was competitive, with Turck’s Trees chosen from more than 120 entries submitted by members of the Minnesota Christmas Tree Association. Last year, Turck’s Trees also provided trees for the Governor’s Residence, highlighting their esteemed reputation in the region.
Residents and visitors are invited to come and admire the tree, which is expected to bring joy and holiday spirit to everyone who sees it. As the decorations are put in place, excitement is building for the upcoming festivities at the Capitol.
Stay tuned for more updates as the tree is adorned and the holiday season unfolds in Minnesota.
