Two Hikers Identified as Deaths Confirmed on Mt. Baldy

UPDATE: The remaining two hikers found dead on Mt. Baldy have been identified as Juan Sarat Lopez, 37, and Bayron Pedro Ramos Garcia, 36, both Guatemalan nationals residing in Los Angeles, officials confirmed on Saturday, January 3. This tragic announcement follows the discovery of the men earlier this week, raising critical concerns about hiking safety in the area.

The San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department reported that Lopez and Ramos Garcia likely fell from the Devil’s Backbone trail and died on the same day they were found, December 29. They were discovered alongside another victim, Marcus Alexander Muench Casanova, a 19-year-old college freshman from Seal Beach, who also reportedly died after a fall of approximately 500 feet.

The search and rescue operation commenced around 11:30 a.m. on December 29 after deputies received an alert about an injured hiker along the trail. Casanova’s hiking companion had ventured out to seek cell phone service and provided rescuers with GPS coordinates. Ground teams and aerial units quickly mobilized, but strong winds hampered helicopter operations.

As aerial search crews scoured the area, they located Casanova and the two other victims. An air medic was dispatched, and unfortunately, all three men were confirmed deceased by evening, marking a devastating outcome for their families and the community.

“This is a tragic reminder of the inherent dangers of hiking, especially in rugged terrains like Mt. Baldy,” said a representative from the sheriff’s department.

Authorities are still investigating the circumstances surrounding the falls, including whether Lopez and Ramos Garcia had any connection with Casanova. As the investigation continues, officials emphasize the importance of safety precautions for hikers in the region.

The deaths of these young men underscore the risks associated with outdoor activities, particularly in treacherous conditions. Hikers are urged to exercise caution and remain aware of changing weather patterns, especially in mountainous areas.

NEXT STEPS: Local authorities are expected to enhance safety measures and provide resources for hikers to prevent future tragedies. The community is also coming together to support the families affected by this heartbreaking incident.
