UAB Football Player Charged with Attempted Murder in Stabbing

BREAKING: A University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) football player, Daniel Mincey, has been charged with attempted murder and assault following a shocking incident that left two teammates injured just hours before a home game. The stabbings occurred on November 25, 2023, at the Football Operations Building on campus in Montgomery, Alabama.

According to court records filed in Jefferson County, Mincey, a 20-year-old offensive lineman, allegedly used a knife to stab both players, identified as Joshua Underwood and JaSire Peterson. Underwood is a freshman from Fultondale, Alabama, while Peterson is a redshirt sophomore from Union City, New Jersey. Fortunately, both players have since been released from the hospital and are recovering.

UAB Athletic Director Mark Ingram expressed the gravity of the situation during a news conference, stating, “Saturday was a very sad day for UAB football and for UAB athletics.” The university community is reeling from the violence, which occurred just hours before UAB was set to face the University of South Florida in a crucial game.

Interim head coach Alex Mortensen emphasized the team’s commitment to the well-being of its players, noting, “What’s most important to us is the well-being of our student-athletes. We are going to make sure they have every opportunity this week to get the counseling services that they need.”

Despite the turmoil, the Blazers proceeded with their last home game of the season, honoring graduating seniors. However, several players chose to abstain from playing. The team faced a tough loss, falling 48-18 to South Florida, which brings their season record to 3-8 and 1-6 in the American Conference. The Blazers’ final game of the season is scheduled for November 29, 2023, against Tulsa.

Authorities have yet to release details surrounding the events that led to the stabbings, as they continue their investigation. The UAB community is urged to support the injured players and their families during this difficult time.
