Police Capture Wanted Woman After Daytime Burglary in Wilmington

A woman sought by authorities was apprehended shortly after an alleged daytime burglary in Wilmington, Delaware, on January 6, 2024. The Wilmington Police Department reported that a member of its Special Operations Division was on patrol in the 800 block of North Shipley Street when they were alerted to a burglary in progress at approximately 09:39.

The officer quickly gathered a description of the suspect from witnesses and initiated a canvass of the surrounding area. Within a short time, the officer identified a woman matching the description in the 100 block of Burton Place. The individual, identified as 40-year-old Emily Popkey, was taken into custody without incident.

Police have charged Popkey with third-degree burglary and theft under $1,500, along with an outstanding warrant. Following her arrest, she was arraigned at Justice of the Peace Court 20 and is currently held at the Delores J. Baylor Women’s Correctional Institution on a secured bail of $4,000.

Authorities emphasized that the charges against Popkey are allegations, and she is presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
