On November 24, 2025, the Morgantown community lost a talented young individual, Brayden Michael Smith, who passed away at the age of 21. A graduate of Morgantown High School, Brayden excelled academically, achieving a dual degree in Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering from West Virginia University in 2025, graduating Summa Cum Laude.
Born on August 13, 2004, in Cary, North Carolina, Brayden was the son of Dr. Jeffrey Smith and Heather Ring Smith. His academic journey was marked by a commitment to helping others; he served as a teacher and tutor at the Statler College of Engineering’s Engineering Learning Center. Brayden was also an active member of the F1 Formula Club at West Virginia University, where he contributed significantly to the club’s projects.
Brayden’s passions extended beyond academics. He cherished attending Pittsburgh Steelers games with his father and enjoyed hobbies such as riding motorcycles, drawing, and building with Legos. His appreciation for Anime and his beloved Subaru WRX STI further illustrated his vibrant personality. Friends and family remember him for his witty humor and generous spirit, leaving a lasting impact on those who knew him.
He is survived by his parents, his brothers, Sergeant Dakota Paul Smith and Barrett Thomas Smith, his grandmothers Susan Vaughan and Ruth Smith, as well as extended family members, including an uncle, an aunt, and several cousins. Brayden was also deeply loved by his pug, Dexter. He was preceded in death by his grandfathers, Dr. Thomas Ring and Donald P. Smith.
In honor of Brayden’s passion for engineering, the family requests that memorial gifts be made to the WVU Department of Mechanical, Materials & Aerospace Engineering Formula SAE Fund #2W1252, where he served as the driver interface leader. Contributions can be made via check or credit card, with specific instructions provided.
Friends and family are invited to pay their respects at Hastings Funeral Home, located at 153 Spruce Street, Morgantown, on December 4, 2025, from 1 p.m. until the funeral service at 4 p.m., officiated by Father Brian Crenwelge. Following the service, Brayden’s cremation services will be arranged.
