Discover Andy Warhol’s Iconic Cowboys and Indians Portfolio
Andy Warhol’s renowned portfolio, Cowboys and Indians, showcases the artist’s unique approach to pop art through a series of captivating screen prints created in 1986. This collection, completed just a year before Warhol’s death, features ten distinct pieces that delve into themes of the American West, utilizing his signature bold colors and cultural commentary.
Each print measures 36 by 36 inches (914 by 914 mm) and is part of a limited edition of 250, each signed and numbered in pencil by Warhol himself. The prints were produced by Rupert Jasen Smith and published by Gaultney, Klineman Art, Inc.. The portfolio includes a diverse range of subjects, such as Mother and Child, Kachina Dolls, General Custer, and the iconic John Wayne.
Artistic Exploration and Legal Challenges
The portrait of John Wayne is particularly noteworthy, inspired by a still from the 1962 film The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance. Following Wayne’s death in 1979, Warhol encountered legal issues regarding the unauthorized use of the actor’s likeness. To navigate these challenges, he inscribed the prints with “unique,” transforming them into distinct objects to mitigate potential legal repercussions.
As part of a broader settlement with Wayne’s family, the Warhol Foundation gifted several prints from the Cowboys and Indians portfolio to the Wayne family, with some now featured in the current exhibition. This intricacy adds depth to the understanding of Warhol’s work and his engagement with cultural narratives.
Experience Warhol’s Legacy
This exhibition invites art enthusiasts to immerse themselves in Warhol’s creative genius and the complex stories that underlie his art. Visitors will have the opportunity to explore not just the vibrant colors and bold styles that define Warhol’s work but also the cultural commentary woven throughout the portfolio.
In celebrating one of the 20th century’s most influential artists, the exhibition offers a chance to reflect on Warhol’s enduring legacy and the dialogues he initiated within the realms of art and popular culture. The Cowboys and Indians portfolio is a testament to Warhol’s ability to blend artistic innovation with significant cultural themes, making it a must-see for anyone interested in the evolution of modern art.
