Fans Demand New “Berserk” Anime as Franchise Faces Uncertainty

The iconic dark fantasy series, Berserk, is facing a critical moment as fans call for a new anime adaptation after a prolonged absence. Since the last anime installment aired in 2016, the franchise has remained dormant, despite the manga’s enduring popularity. Following the unexpected passing of its creator, Kentaro Miura, in 2021, Kouji Mori, a close friend and collaborator, has continued to uphold Miura’s vision, allowing the story to evolve and retain its compelling nature.

Berserk’s adaptations have had mixed receptions, with the original series by OLM in 1997 setting a high bar. It closely followed the source material and maintained the series’ signature dark themes. The music composed by Susumu Hirasawa further elevated its status, turning it into a beloved classic. However, significant omissions, such as the character Wyald, highlight the challenges of adapting such a complex narrative.

Later adaptations, including Studio 4°C‘s animated films of the Golden Age Arc, offered stunning visuals but condensed the story excessively, glossing over vital elements. The 2016 adaptation by Liden Films attempted to tackle new arcs but faced harsh criticism for its rushed pacing and animation quality. Despite this, it is clear that the Berserk saga still holds vast potential for further exploration.

The manga continues to offer rich material, particularly the Black Swordsman and Conviction Arcs, which remain largely untouched in animation. The Black Swordsman Arc, known for its intense violence and emotional depth, presents a unique opportunity for adaptation. It marks a darker phase for the protagonist, Guts, as he grapples with loss and vengeance after the harrowing events of the Eclipse. The challenge lies in securing the necessary rights from Hakusensha, the publisher, to ensure any adaptation aligns with the original intent.

In an effort to fill the void, fan-driven initiatives have emerged. One notable example is Eclypse, a group of fan animators who conducted a vote in September 2023 to gauge interest in a project titled “Berserk: The Black Swordsman.” The resulting trailer showcased an eerie ambiance and intense visuals that resonated with fans. Unfortunately, the project faced a setback as it proceeded without the necessary approvals from Hakusensha.

The demand for a new adaptation has sparked discussions about potential studios that could bring Berserk back to life. While many fans believe MAPPA would be a strong choice due to their recent successes, the studio’s current commitments may hinder their ability to take on such a project. Other studios, including Wit Studio and Madhouse, are also considered viable candidates. As the anime industry evolves, the landscape for adaptations is more favorable than it was a decade ago, creating a promising environment for a new take on this beloved series.

Ultimately, the need for a new Berserk anime adaptation reflects the franchise’s lasting impact on the anime and manga community. As fans await further developments, they remain hopeful that the series will receive the attention it deserves, providing a fresh perspective on its rich narrative and complex characters.
