Iconic rock band Jane’s Addiction has officially disbanded, marking the end of an era for the influential group. The announcement came on Wednesday, more than a year after a chaotic final concert that culminated in an on-stage altercation between lead singer Perry Farrell and guitarist Dave Navarro. In separate statements, both Farrell and the band addressed the fallout from the incident during a show in September 2024 in Boston.
The band’s official Instagram account released a message reflecting on their time together. “After that show, without notice to Perry, we unilaterally determined it would be best to not continue the tour and made inaccurate statements about Perry’s mental health which we regret,” the statement read. It emphasized a desire to resolve differences, stating, “We now look forward to the future as we embark on our separate musical and creative endeavors. Jane’s Addiction will forever live in our hearts.”
In his own statement, Farrell expressed remorse for his actions during the concert, where he punched Navarro during the performance of “Ocean Size.” “I’ve reflected on it and know I didn’t handle myself the way I should have. I apologize to our patrons and my bandmates for losing my temper and for disrupting the show,” he said. He acknowledged the band’s significant impact on music and culture, emphasizing the importance of their legacy.
The incident prompted the cancellation of what was to be a triumphant tour, marking the band’s first outing with bassist Eric Avery since 2010, and featuring their first new music in 34 years. The 2024 single “Imminent Redemption” was highly anticipated, but the tour ended abruptly due to the altercation. Avery notably intervened during the incident to remove Farrell from the stage.
Jane’s Addiction has experienced various lineups throughout its history, including collaborations with notable musicians such as Duff McKagan and Flea. The band, formed in the mid-1980s, is celebrated for its contributions to alternative rock, with hits like “Jane Says,” “Stop!” and the Grammy-nominated “Been Caught Stealing.” Their 1991 farewell tour gave rise to the famous Lollapalooza festival, further cementing their legacy in music history.
Farrell, who has also achieved recognition through his work with Porno for Pyros, highlighted the importance of the band in his life. He thanked fans for their support and expressed disappointment for not meeting expectations during the Boston show. “From the bottom of my heart, I want to thank each and every one of you for your continued love and support,” he concluded.
The dissolution of Jane’s Addiction marks the end of a significant chapter in rock music, as each member now prepares to pursue individual projects. The band’s influence, characterized by their innovative sound and cultural impact, will undoubtedly remain a lasting part of the music landscape.
