President Donald Trump has signed a renewal of the SUPPORT Act, a comprehensive law originally enacted in 2018 by U.S. Senator Bill Cassidy of Louisiana. This legislation, which had previously expired in September 2023, aims to combat the escalating crisis of drug overdoses across the United States.
The SUPPORT Act is designed to provide critical resources for prevention, treatment, and recovery programs. It specifically targets programs for mothers and infants affected by substance use disorders, as well as establishing opioid recovery centers. “The opioid and mental health crisis is devastating families across the nation. Thousands of Americans die each month from an overdose,” Cassidy stated in a recent news release. “President Trump and I are committed to tackling this crisis head-on. I’m proud to work with him to enact the SUPPORT Act to equip communities with vital resources to save lives.”
The law also includes provisions to safeguard the 9-8-8 Suicide Prevention Lifeline against cybersecurity threats. Additionally, it supports training initiatives for first responders to effectively administer overdose-reversing medications, a critical step given the alarming rise in opioid-related fatalities.
In conjunction with the renewal of the SUPPORT Act, Trump previously signed the HALT Fentanyl Act in July. This legislation permanently classifies fentanyl-related substances as Schedule I drugs, which facilitates more stringent law enforcement measures against dealers. Fentanyl, a powerful synthetic opioid, has played a significant role in the surge of overdose deaths nationwide.
