Rapper Wiz Khalifa has received a nine-month prison sentence in Romania after being convicted of drug possession. The ruling was announced on December 18, 2024, following his arrest in July 2024, when he was allegedly found with 18 grams of cannabis after performing at the Beach, Please! festival in the coastal village of Costinesti. This information was reported by the Associated Press, citing Romania’s national news agency, Agerpres.
The conviction stems from a charge of “possession of dangerous drugs, without right, for personal consumption.” Earlier in the year, Khalifa, whose real name is Cameron Thomaz, had been fined $830 by a lower court in Constanta County for the same offense. However, prosecutors appealed the initial ruling, pushing for a more severe penalty, which ultimately led to the recent prison sentence.
In the lead-up to the sentencing, prosecutors claimed that Khalifa consumed cannabis on stage during his performance. “During a performance at a music festival held in the resort of Costinesti, the accused was found to have possessed more than 18 grams of cannabis and to have consumed another quantity in the form of a handmade cigarette,” stated officials from Romania’s Directorate for Investigating Organized Crime and Terrorism (DIICOT).
Following his performance, Khalifa expressed regret over the incident, stating in a post on social media platform X, “Last night’s show was amazing. I didn’t mean any disrespect to the country of Romania by lighting up on stage. They were very respectful and let me go. I’ll be back soon. But without a big ass joint next time.”
This legal issue arose just as Khalifa and his partner, Aimee Aguilar, welcomed their first child together. Aguilar shared her postpartum experience in a TikTok video, revealing that she had given birth a week prior and discussed the physical challenges she faced during recovery. Khalifa is also a father to Sebastian, his 12-year-old son with ex-wife Amber Rose.
In a separate interview earlier in the year, Khalifa humorously addressed his parenting style, admitting to attending parent-teacher conferences “stoned” and emphasizing the importance of authenticity in his interactions with school officials. “I want them to connect with the real me. They’re not going to get a fake version of me or this made-up parent that society makes you think that you’re supposed to be,” he remarked during a January 2024 appearance on the “Call Her Daddy” podcast.
While Khalifa’s recent legal troubles have attracted significant media attention, they also highlight ongoing discussions regarding drug laws and their implications for public figures. His case reflects broader societal attitudes toward cannabis use, particularly in different cultural contexts.
As Khalifa prepares to serve his sentence, the outcome of this case may influence not only his career but also public discourse surrounding drug use and celebrity accountability in various regions.
