Barbara Todd Benson, Beloved Matriarch, Passes at 77

Barbara Todd Benson, a cherished figure known for her creativity and resilience, passed away on July 17, 2025, after a two-year battle with cancer. She was 77 years old. Born in Passaic, New Jersey, in 1948, Barbara moved with her family to Santa Cruz, California, in 1953, where she would spend much of her life.

She attended local schools, including Scotts Valley Junior High and Soquel High School, graduating in 1967. Barbara furthered her education at Heald’s Business College, equipping herself with skills that would serve her throughout her life. In 1989, she relocated to Santa Rosa, California, where she continued to cultivate her passions.

Barbara is survived by her two sons, Jeff Benson (Patti) of Henderson, Nevada, and Gary Benson (Shannon) of Fresno, California. She also leaves behind five grandchildren: Nicole, Andrew, Lauren, Scott, and Dean, as well as her great-grandson, Lukas. Her family, which includes sisters Lauri (Greg) of Portland, Oregon, and Nancy (Don) of Watsonville, California, along with numerous nephews, nieces, and cousins, remembers her fondly.

Throughout her life, Barbara was known for her remarkable creativity. She enjoyed sewing, quilting, crocheting, gardening, and various crafts. Her family treasures the handmade items she created, which reflect her artistic spirit and dedication. Barbara maintained a quirky sense of humor and a positive outlook, even in the face of multiple health challenges.

In a statement from her family, they expressed, “She never complained despite her many cancers, and her ability to stay positive until the end inspired all of us.”

A private family service is planned to honor her memory on her birthday in Santa Cruz. The family requests that those who wish to remember Barbara consider sending flowers or planting a living memorial in her name. Barbara Todd Benson will be forever loved and missed by all who knew her.
