Carolyn Mailliard Hacker, a cherished figure in the San Rafael community, passed away on November 21, 2025, at the age of 87 due to complications from Alzheimer’s disease. Her enduring legacy is marked by a lifetime of service, love for her family, and contributions to her local community.
Born in San Francisco in 1938, Carolyn was the eldest daughter of J.W. Mailliard and Margaret Field, and the eldest granddaughter of Ward and Kate Mailliard. Her family had significant connections throughout the Bay Area, including in San Geronimo, Cotati, and Yorkville. These places remained integral to her identity throughout her life.
Carolyn spent part of her early childhood traveling with her family due to her father’s service in the United States Army during World War II. After the war, they returned to San Francisco, where Carolyn received her education at KD Burke School, Katherine Branson Girls School, and Connecticut College for Women. In 1963, she settled in San Rafael, where she would remain for over sixty years.
Passions and Contributions
Throughout her life, Carolyn nurtured a passion for gardening, earning numerous awards at the Marin County Fair for her stunning plants. Her love for nature was complemented by hobbies such as knitting and a deep commitment to genealogy. Carolyn dedicated countless hours to researching her family’s history, ensuring that their legacy would be preserved for future generations.
In addition to her personal interests, Carolyn was a devoted volunteer and active member of her community. From 1972 to 1980, she held various roles within the Miller Creek Elementary School District and the San Rafael City Schools District. Her commitment to education and community service reflected her belief in giving back to the society that shaped her.
Family and Legacy
Carolyn is survived by her husband, Paul Hacker, her children, Barbara (married to Greg) and Lyn (married to Don), as well as her grandchildren, Andrew (married to Katy), Chris, Emily (married to Mike), Amanda, and Kevin. She also leaves behind a great-granddaughter, Jocelyn, and her sisters, Kathy and Margot, along with numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins.
A Celebration of Life is planned to honor Carolyn on her birthday and Mother’s Day in May 2026. In lieu of flowers, the family has requested that memorial contributions be made to the San Rafael Public Library Foundation or the Marin Humane Society.
