Community Mourns Passing of Beloved Educator Mary Ingleby
Mary Ruth Ingleby, a dedicated educator and advocate for children and animals, passed away peacefully in her sleep on October 18, 2025, at the age of 75. Ingleby had been battling Alzheimer’s Disease for several years, a struggle that significantly impacted her life and those around her.
Born on June 22, 1950, in Salt Lake City, Ingleby was the third of six children in the family of Don and Lavon Ingleby. Her early life was marked by a significant event that shaped her future; at the age of sixteen, she gave birth to her first child, whom she placed for adoption. This experience fueled her passion for teaching, particularly young children.
Ingleby pursued her commitment to education by earning an Associate Degree in Early Childhood Education from Cabrillo College. She dedicated many years to teaching children aged three to five, fostering a love for reading and learning in her students. Among those she taught was her second son, Damian, who continues to share his mother’s enthusiasm for education.
A Life of Passion and Community Engagement
Ingleby found joy in the coastal town of Santa Cruz, where she lived for over 53 years. Her love for the ocean and beach life was evident, and she became an integral part of the local community. Beyond her teaching career, she was known for her compassion for animals and her commitment to supporting marginalized groups. Ingleby regularly contributed her time and resources to various causes, reflecting her strong sense of social justice.
Music was another significant aspect of her life. She was actively involved in several choirs and singing duos, illustrating her deep appreciation for the arts. Her home was often filled with the sounds of music, creating an environment that celebrated creativity and expression.
In her later years, Ingleby was fortunate to reconnect with her first child, Bill. The two shared meaningful time together, developing a relationship that was tragically cut short by his passing in his mid-30s. Ingleby is survived by her son Damian and her younger sister, Colette.
