Saban Community Clinic and Westmont Counseling Center have officially merged, significantly expanding access to medical and behavioral health services in South Los Angeles. This partnership aims to unify the strengths of both organizations, enhancing their commitment to serve underserved communities in the area.
The merger, effective November 8, 2023, will see Westmont Counseling Center integrate into Saban Community Clinic, preserving Westmont’s legacy while broadening the range of services offered. Muriel Nouwezem, Chief Executive Officer of Saban Community Clinic, expressed enthusiasm for the collaboration. “We are thrilled to join forces with Westmont Counseling Center. Westmont’s impact in the community has been extraordinary, and together, we can ensure that residents have access to care that goes beyond behavioral health,” she stated.
For decades, Westmont Counseling Center has been a vital resource for behavioral health services in South Los Angeles, providing support to individuals and families with empathy and expertise. Through this merger, Saban aims to build on Westmont’s foundation by continuing its mission and enhancing service offerings. This will include comprehensive medical care, dental services, preventive screenings, and a broader network of specialists.
Joel McLafferty, Executive Director of Westmont Counseling Center, emphasized the positive implications of this partnership. “Westmont is committed to helping the wonderful people of this community in any way we can. With this merger, we will continue to provide compassionate mental health services while opening the door to a new world of medical services right here at home,” he noted.
The merger promises to deliver uninterrupted services for existing Westmont patients, as Saban Community Clinic will closely collaborate with staff, patients, and community partners to ensure a seamless transition. Saban Community Clinic, established in 1967 as the LA Free Clinic, operates multiple health centers and a mobile clinic across Los Angeles and West Hollywood. The organization facilitates over 155,000 visits annually and provides more than $6.5 million in free services each year.
This new alliance is expected to enhance overall health outcomes in the community, providing individuals with a more integrated approach to care. By pooling resources and expertise, Saban Community Clinic and Westmont Counseling Center are setting a precedent for how health services can effectively respond to the needs of diverse populations in urban areas.
