At a meeting on December 17, 2023, the board of trustees for Syringa Hospital convened in Grangeville to discuss strategies aimed at enhancing community education and improving the visibility of healthcare providers. Key topics included the promotion of wellness exams, increased outreach for weight loss consultations, and initiatives to rebuild trust within the local community.
During the meeting, community relations and marketing coordinator Hannah Seitz emphasized the importance of showcasing the clinic and its providers. She highlighted recent changes, such as extended hours for the walk-in clinic, aiming to increase public awareness of these services. “Our goal is to let people know about the changes we’re making to better serve them,” said Seitz.
Trustee Jim Paradiso raised the question of whether any providers specialize in geriatric care, recognizing the aging population in the area. Although interim CEO Bruce Shepard noted that there is currently no dedicated geriatric provider, he assured the board that the clinic’s caregivers remain committed to focusing on Medicare wellness exams and collaborating with local employers to encourage participation in these preventive services.
A Medicare wellness exam, also known as an Annual Wellness Visit (AWV), plays a crucial role in assessing overall health and formulating personalized prevention plans. Paradiso pointed out the necessity of marketing these exams effectively, stating, “Many of my friends believe this is unnecessary. We need to explain why these exams matter.”
Trustee Terri Tackett underscored the need for community education regarding weight loss medications and their potential side effects. “People often turn to social media for answers instead of consulting their doctors,” she noted. Seitz mentioned that provider Nathan Winder has a strong interest in weight-related health issues and is well-equipped to assist patients considering surgical options.
Chief Operating Officer Michelle Schaeffer explained that all providers at the clinic have access to resources that enable them to treat patients effectively. She emphasized that Winder’s approach goes beyond traditional advice, incorporating a thorough examination of how current medications may impact weight. “Dr. Smith, along with PA-C Winder, are committed to ensuring that surgery is the best option for each patient,” Schaeffer added.
The meeting served as an important platform for discussing ways to enhance healthcare accessibility and understanding within the community. As Syringa Hospital continues to adapt and respond to the needs of its patients, the trustees remain focused on fostering stronger connections with the residents of Grangeville and surrounding areas.
