Bob Falls Directs Acclaimed ‘Amadeus’ at Steppenwolf Theatre

Robert Falls, the renowned former artistic director of Goodman Theatre, is now leading the acclaimed production of “Amadeus” at Steppenwolf Theatre in Chicago. This show has captivated audiences and has been extended due to popular demand, running until January 25, 2024.

Reflecting on a Lifelong Passion

Falls, an Illinois native, has been a significant figure in the theatre scene for decades. He shared insights into his journey, emphasizing his humble beginnings in a small farming community. “I grew up in this farming community, 900 people downstate Illinois, a town called Ashland,” Falls explained. He later moved to the suburbs, spending his high school years in Villa Park and Lombard.

His passion for storytelling began early. “I was always putting on plays with the kids in the neighborhood, and I’ve just been lucky to continue to do that my whole life,” he noted. This unyielding drive has led him to create powerful theatrical experiences that resonate deeply with audiences.

Exploring the Themes of ‘Amadeus’

“Amadeus”, originally written by Peter Shaffer, delves into themes of envy and jealousy. It tells the story of composer Antonio Salieri, whose life is turned upside down by the arrival of the prodigious Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart. Falls described Salieri’s struggle as he confronts Mozart’s extraordinary talent, asking, “Why does this punk seem to have this talent from God?”

The relevance of these themes continues to strike a chord today. Falls remarked on how modern technology influences perceptions of success and happiness. “We’ve fallen into a world of envy because of that little device we carry around in our hands,” he said, referring to social media platforms where individuals often compare their lives to others.

He reflected on his extensive experience with both Steppenwolf and Goodman Theatre, acknowledging their status as leading theatrical institutions in Chicago. “I realized I’ve worked with over half of the ensemble members,” Falls stated, highlighting the collaborative spirit that enhances the theatre experience.

One of Falls’ cherished moments as a director is stepping out of a rehearsal room, where the transformative power of theatre becomes evident. “I’ve seen it change people’s lives,” he remarked. “Young people come into theatre for the first time and just be taken away with it.” His passion for introducing audiences to the world of theatre remains at the forefront of his career.

With “Amadeus” receiving acclaim and extending its run, audiences have the opportunity to witness Falls’ vision firsthand. This production not only showcases his talent but also reinforces the enduring impact of storytelling in the arts.
