Bridgeport Elks Lodge 714 Marks 125 Years of Community Service

The Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks Bridgeport Lodge 714 is set to celebrate its 125th anniversary in 2026. Founded in 1901 as the Norristown Elks, the lodge originally operated at the intersection of Main and Swede Streets before relocating to 222 Haws Avenue. Over the years, it has evolved significantly, boasting a membership of 2,000 at its peak and a concert band. Today, the lodge, now situated in Bridgeport, has over 400 members.

As one of the largest fraternal organizations in the United States, the Elks organization comprises nearly 800,000 members across more than 1,900 lodges. The organization has counted numerous prominent individuals among its members, including former U.S. Presidents Franklin D. Roosevelt, John F. Kennedy, and George H. Bush. Additionally, well-known entertainers like Clint Eastwood and Buffalo Bill Cody and sports legends such as Vince Lombardi and Eli Manning have also been part of the Elks community.

The Elks have a rich history of service, particularly during the World Wars. Approximately 70,000 members served in World War I, with 1,000 lives lost in the line of duty. In World War II, around 100,000 Elks served, leading to 1,600 sacrifices for their country. The organization’s mission emphasizes key principles of charity, justice, brotherly love, and fidelity, alongside a commitment to American patriotism.

The motto “Elks Care, Elks Share” reflects the lodge’s dedication to community service, which includes activities such as food drives, scholarships, drug awareness initiatives, and veteran support. The Elks also host national events like the Hoop Shoot and Soccer Shoot aimed at engaging children and promoting sportsmanship.

To commemorate its rich history and ongoing commitment to the community, Bridgeport Lodge 714 will hold a celebration on March 28, 2026, at the Alloy in King of Prussia. The current Exalted Ruler, Troy Schantz, will pass the leadership to Dan Simons in April.
