The community is grieving the loss of Delores K. Metcalf Morrell, affectionately known as “Dee,” who passed away on December 14, 2025, at the age of 82. A beloved educator and friend, she left a lasting impact on her students and colleagues throughout her extensive teaching career.
Born on August 3, 1943, in Vallejo, California, Dee was the daughter of Irene and Charles Dickens. Following her parents’ separation when she was just three years old, her mother married Claude Metcalf, who played a significant role in Dee’s upbringing. As a teenager, she chose to officially change her last name to Metcalf, embracing her family’s name as she transitioned into adulthood.
Dee’s educational journey began in earnest after her family relocated to Arkansas, where they operated a chicken ranch. She graduated from Lamar High School in 1961 and completed her studies at the University of the Ozarks in 1965. Shortly thereafter, she started her teaching career as an English teacher at Booneville High School, where she worked for three years before moving to Red Bluff Union High School in 1968. During her 12 years there, she not only taught English but also served as the yearbook advisor, shaping the experiences of many students.
Beyond her teaching duties, Dee was actively involved in various vocal groups and choirs, reflecting her lifelong passion for music. She also contributed to the Fitzhugh Society, a local literary group in Red Bluff, which she remained a part of for over 45 years.
In June 1981, Dee met R. Barry Morrell, and the couple married on June 27, 1987. Their marriage brought joy to their family, including their daughter, Megan Rene’ Lush, and later their granddaughter, Morgan Ashley Lush.
In June 1990, Dee’s life took a dramatic turn when she was involved in a serious car accident caused by a drunk driver. The incident resulted in severe brain trauma and injuries that required extensive medical treatment. She spent six weeks in intensive care and an additional ten weeks in the hospital, ultimately missing a year of work before returning to the classroom. Although her cognitive function recovered, her physical injuries led her to transition into a new role as the Director of the Independent Study Program for Red Bluff Union High School, a position she held until her retirement in 2000. Her dedication to education was recognized in 1998 when she was named the California Independent Study Teacher of the Year.
Following her retirement, Dee was invited to establish the Independent Study Program for the Yuba City Charter School, where she worked until 2011. Once fully retired, Dee and Barry embraced a life of travel, exploring both domestic and international destinations, including several trips across the United States and adventures in Europe and the Middle East.
Unfortunately, the long-term effects of her earlier accident began to resurface about four years before her passing, leading to cognitive decline. In 2025, she suffered two significant falls, resulting in a broken pelvis and hip, which further impacted her health. In search of support, Dee and Barry relocated to Arizona to be closer to their family. She lived for approximately eight months following her second fall before passing away peacefully.
Dee is survived by her husband, R. Barry Morrell; her daughter, Megan Rene’ Lush; and her granddaughter, Morgan Ashley Lush. She is also remembered by her brother, Richard Metcalf, and his wife Sharon, as well as her sister-in-law, Lynn Swendiman, and her husband George, along with numerous nieces and nephews across the country.
Known for her loyalty, humor, and outgoing spirit, Dee leaves behind many cherished friends, including Kate Whitmore, Sue Williams, and the surviving members of her close-knit group, Jean Hanson and Nancy Hickson.
A celebration of Dee’s life will take place at the Red Bluff Community Center on March 15, 2026, from 11:00 a.m. to approximately 1:00 p.m., providing an opportunity for friends and family to honor her memory and legacy.
