Inaugural Tour de Friendship Charity Ride Launches in Boca Raton

A new charity bike ride, the Tour de Friendship, is set to kick off in Boca Raton, Florida, on November 9, 2023. This inaugural event aims to raise funds for the Friendship House, a nonprofit organization dedicated to supporting individuals with special needs and their families. Rabbi Sholom Kessler, the executive director and founder of the program, emphasizes the significance of the ride in fostering an inclusive community.

The ride will cover a challenging 60 miles, starting and ending at the Friendship House located at 17950 N. Military Trail. Participants are encouraged to raise $1,500 each, with all proceeds directly benefiting the organization’s year-round programming. Currently, the Friendship House serves approximately 70 local families, with aspirations for future expansion.

Kessler, who established the organization in 2020 within the Chabad of Central Boca Raton, believes that children with special needs often go unnoticed. “Oftentimes, children with special needs are overlooked, and we are here to change that,” he stated. He sees the potential for these individuals to create a positive impact on their communities through inclusion.

The Tour de Friendship is not only about fundraising but also about building community ties. Kessler views the event as an opportunity for locals to unite for a common cause. “It’s an opportunity for the Boca community to come together, not just in support, but in shared purpose,” he added.

On the day of the event, riders will begin with a light kosher breakfast and a ceremonial send-off, followed by a scenic route along State Road A1A toward Palm Beach. Refreshment breaks will be provided every 15 miles, ensuring cyclists have the support needed to complete the journey.

While cyclists can bring their own bikes, rental options will also be available. Organizers are making efforts to accommodate varying skill levels, though participants should be prepared for the significant distance. Kessler has been training regularly with a group of supporters, highlighting the camaraderie that the ride fosters.

“I think the value of riding, and people in the community putting their foot to the pedal to raise funds for special needs and to celebrate afterwards, makes them a part of it,” Kessler remarked. He believes that firsthand involvement will allow riders to witness the impact of the Friendship House’s programs.
