Lyons Township Dance Team Achieves Historic 2nd Place at State

The competitive dance team from Lyons Township High School made history on January 31, 2024, by securing a second-place trophy at the Illinois High School Association state meet. This achievement marks a significant milestone for the team, which had not previously brought home a trophy in its eight appearances at the Class 3A competition. The state meet took place at the Grossinger Motors Arena in Bloomington, where the team earned a score of 96.60, just shy of champion Lake Park‘s score of 96.88.

In a dramatic awards ceremony, the tension heightened as finalists awaited the announcement of their placements. With ten teams in contention, the atmosphere was charged with anticipation. After the third-place team, Stevenson from Lincolnshire, was announced, the Lions held their breath until their name was called for second place. Coach Brittany Smith described the experience as a “rollercoaster of emotions,” reflecting on the uncertainty and hope that filled the room.

What set this year’s team apart? Coach Smith attributed their success to the innovative choreography developed by seniors Hayden Frazier and Nora Foley. Instead of hiring an outside choreographer, they crafted the performance themselves, tapping into the individual strengths of each team member. Smith noted, “Having the kids do it – and knowing what everyone can do – that really made a difference.”

The performance, themed “Dracula,” showcased a unique and avant-garde style, distinguished by its dark undertones. Smith emphasized that this creative direction was unlike anything seen at the competition, setting them apart from other teams.

In addition to Frazier and Foley, the roster included talented dancers such as Kassidy Powell, Reese Morgan, and Aara Maheronnaghsh, among others. The team’s collaborative effort and their ability to blend different skills were pivotal in their success.

Following their impressive state performance, the Lions quickly shifted focus to national competition. From February 6-7, they participated in the Universal Dance Association meet, where they competed in the Large Varsity D1 Jazz division in Orlando. The team achieved a commendable fifth place with a score of 88.4125. Coach Smith remarked on the significance of this competition, noting, “We have qualified for nationals before but never took the jump to actually compete. But this is the year we felt like we could do it.”

The Lyons Township High School dance team’s recent accomplishments reflect both their dedication and the innovative spirit fostered by their leadership. As they continue to build on this momentum, the future looks bright for these young dancers.
