Macy’s has discontinued its 80-year tradition of hosting Santa Claus at the Union Square store in San Francisco, California. This change comes as the iconic figure will instead embark on a national tour, visiting various communities across the country following his appearance in the annual Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade.
According to a statement from Macy’s officials reported by the San Francisco Chronicle, the decision aims to allow Santa to reach new locations. The statement indicated, “This year, Macy’s Santa will not be available at our Union Square location. Instead, he will be going on a national tour to visit stores and communities he hasn’t had a chance to appear in before.”
The absence of Santa Claus at the Union Square store has sparked disappointment among local shoppers. Yvonne Fletcher and her husband, Adrian, expressed their sentiments to Yahoo News, noting, “It seems weird without Santa Claus. I can’t bring my grandkids, and that’s what we were waiting for.”
Shopping tradition faces a significant shift as many families looked forward to visiting Santa at this particular location. Another shopper, identified as Briseyda, shared her thoughts with ABC 7 News, stating, “It’s a tradition. That’s what we look forward to. It’s heartbreaking. I have kids of my own. The one thing they look forward to is Santa.” She emphasized, “Christmas is all about traditions and memories. Santa brings everyone together.”
The tradition of Santa at Macy’s Union Square began in the late 1940s, offering families the opportunity to take pictures and share their Christmas wish lists with him. The only interruption occurred during the pandemic year. From around 1990 until 2010, the beloved role was filled by the well-known “Santa John,” making the experience even more memorable for countless families.
While the national tour aims to broaden Santa’s reach, the impact of this decision on local traditions remains to be seen. For many, the Union Square experience was a cherished part of their holiday celebrations, leaving a palpable void this season.
