Nigerian-American Artist Temi Coker Launches Home Collection at Walmart

Nigerian-American multidisciplinary artist Temi Coker has launched a new home collection inspired by his cultural heritage, now available through a partnership with Walmart. This collection features home décor items designed to celebrate the beauty of dual identities, merging African and African American influences.

Coker, originally from Lagos, Nigeria, and currently based in Dallas, aims to create heirlooms that his children can pass down to future generations. “I wanted to create heirlooms that celebrate the beauty in that duality,” Coker said. The collection includes a variety of items such as vases, pillows, throws, and rugs, with prices ranging from less than $13 to $320.

Designs Reflecting Culture and Heritage

The vases in the collection showcase textured surfaces that evoke the intricate patterns found in Black hairstyles, aiming to carry forward “memory, tradition, and culture into tomorrow,” according to Coker. Several of the vases are 3D printed and produced in the United States, allowing him to refine each design to align with his vision.

The vibrant colors and textile patterns, including grass green, teal blue, warm red, and black, reflect the lively culture of Nigeria while seamlessly integrating into modern American homes. Coker emphasizes that these designs resonate with families of all backgrounds as they build their own traditions.

Coker’s partnership with Walmart is significant, as it enables these culturally rich pieces to reach a broader audience. “This isn’t luxury for the few, but legacy made accessible to all,” he stated. The collection is designed to bring beauty into the heart of homes, where lasting family memories are created.

Commitment to Diversity and Accessibility

Walmart has expressed its commitment to partnering with diverse creators, providing customers with designs that represent the communities they serve. The launch of Coker’s collection aligns with this mission. “We’re on a journey to democratize style, and our new Temi Coker collection is an exciting opportunity to bring his authentic perspective and bold, beautiful designs exclusively to Walmart customers,” said Creighton Kiper, Senior Vice President of Home at Walmart U.S.

Coker is known for his vibrant, Afrofuturist-inspired work, which celebrates Black culture and identity. His distinctive style incorporates bold colors, geometric patterns, and cultural symbolism, making him a prominent figure in contemporary design. His previous clients include major brands such as Google, Nike, Netflix, Adobe, and The New York Times.

Coker’s artistic achievements have garnered recognition from prestigious organizations like the Type Directors Club and the Society of Illustrators, solidifying his status as a sought-after visual voice in the industry.

The collection is now available online, marking an important step in making beautifully designed home décor accessible to families at various price points. You can explore Coker’s Walmart collection through the official website.
