Penn Hillel: A Hub for Jewish Life at the University of Pennsylvania
The University of Pennsylvania, located in Philadelphia, hosts a vibrant Jewish community, with approximately 11% of its student population identifying as Jewish. This figure translates to nearly 1,100 Jewish students on campus, according to data from Hillel International. Amidst various organizations available for Jewish life in the city, Penn Hillel distinguishes itself by reaching over 85% of the undergraduate Jewish population each year.
Founded over a century ago, Penn Hillel serves as a central hub for Jewish students. The organization’s primary facility, Steinhardt Hall, opened its doors in 2003 and has since become a beloved space for community engagement. It features lounges, classrooms, an auditorium, a beit midrash (house of study), a library, and a kosher dining hall, providing a comprehensive environment for academic and social activities.
Opportunities for engagement extend beyond the hall itself. Students can participate in community service through the Tzedek Center or take part in school-sponsored trips to Israel via the Birthright Israel program. Weekly Shabbat services are held every Friday night and Saturday morning, catering to diverse student schedules. For those unable to attend in person, Penn Hillel’s “Shabbat across Penn” initiative allows students anywhere in the world to receive subsidized Shabbat meals, ensuring that no one feels disconnected from this important tradition.
As a welcoming organization, Penn Hillel actively supports prospective students. High school students interested in the university can connect with current students for personalized tours of Steinhardt Hall, offering them a glimpse into campus life and the Jewish community.
The organization prides itself on its inclusivity, accommodating various Jewish backgrounds and practices. At Penn, Hillel offers a unique blend of opportunities, featuring staff that includes Reform, Conservative, and Orthodox rabbis. This diverse representation allows the organization to appeal to a broad spectrum of students, fostering a community that values both tradition and modern Jewish life.
As Penn Hillel continues to thrive, it remains a significant player in the Jewish landscape of Philadelphia, enriching the lives of students and supporting their connection to Jewish culture and community.
