Phil Colicchio Achieves 600th Win in Landmark Victory

Phil Colicchio reached a significant milestone in his coaching career by achieving his 600th win on March 16, 2024. His team, the Elizabeth Minutemen, triumphed over Chester (PA) with a score of 66-50 during the Battle by the Bay tournament held in Atlantic City. This victory places Colicchio among an elite group of only 26 boys’ coaches in New Jersey history to reach this impressive mark.

Colicchio’s journey as a coach has been marked by outstanding achievements. He is already recognized as New Jersey’s most successful public school coach, having secured eight state championships—six with Linden and two with Elizabeth. This latest win comes just days after another Union County coach, Art Cattano of New Providence, also celebrated his 600th career victory.

In his eighth season at Elizabeth, Colicchio has built a reputation for developing teams that excel defensively, even when faced with challenges such as young or undersized rosters. His strategic focus on defense has led to unexpected victories, while his teams have also capitalized on scoring talent to secure state titles. His first championship came in just his third season at Linden in the 1999-00 season, thanks to standout players Jamaal Tate and Dan Delvalle.

Key Milestones in Colicchio’s Career

Colicchio’s coaching journey has seen significant moments beyond his 600th win. His 500th victory occurred on March 12, 2020, during the Group 4 semifinals against Paterson Kennedy. This match took place at an empty Dunn Center in Elizabeth, just three days before schools and businesses closed due to the COVID-19 pandemic. His milestone victories are characterized by their dramatic contexts, making them memorable highlights in his coaching history.

Prior to that, Colicchio achieved his 400th win on March 3, 2016, while coaching Linden during the Group 4 final against Asbury Park in Toms River. That Linden team went on to compete in the Tournament of Champions, ultimately facing the formidable St. Anthony, although they were defeated with a score of 55-38.

Colicchio’s accomplishments at Elizabeth have included guiding the Minutemen to Group 4 titles in both 2022 and 2024. The 2024 squad, featuring talented players such as senior London Carson and junior Cameron McRae, finished the season with a strong record of 23-5. This consistent success underscores Colicchio’s ability to adapt his coaching style to fit the strengths of his players, ensuring that even in challenging circumstances, his teams remain competitive.

With his latest achievement, Phil Colicchio not only solidifies his legacy in New Jersey high school basketball but also continues to inspire future generations of players and coaches. His remarkable journey demonstrates the impact of dedication and discipline in the world of sports.
