The Santa Maria Camera Club hosted its annual Awards Reception on January 24, 2024, at the Lake Marie Valley Club, honoring members for their exceptional photographic achievements and service to the community. The evening celebrated the contributions of several individuals, most notably naming Jim McKinnis as Photographer of the Year and presenting the prestigious Shepard Award to Elaine Calvert for her dedicated service and leadership as vice president.
The event also served as the formal installation of the club’s new Board of Directors, marking a significant transition in leadership. Jeanne Sparks, the current president of the Santa Maria Camera Club, emphasized the welcoming atmosphere of the organization, inviting local photographers to join their enthusiastic community.
Welcoming Community for Photographers
“We invite local photographers to join our fun-loving group,” Sparks stated. “A love of photography is all that is required. We have members with varying levels of expertise, some using their phones to take photos and others using sophisticated equipment and editing programs.” The club supports both amateur and experienced photographers, with some members showcasing their work in galleries or selling their artwork online.
The Santa Maria Camera Club provides a variety of opportunities for engagement. Members gather once a month for in-person meetings in Santa Maria, participate in online competitions, and enjoy Saturday breakfasts together. Additionally, the club organizes field trips throughout the month, allowing members to connect and share their passion for photography in diverse settings.
Sparks noted, “Whatever they choose, they will find friendly members who will receive them warmly. We treat each other with respect and kindness. We have become like family and are always happy to welcome new members to our group.”
