Tifton Community Steps Up for Domestic Violence Awareness Campaign

The Tifton community came together on October 23, 2025, to support the Walk A Mile in Her Shoes campaign, an initiative aimed at raising awareness about domestic violence. Participants donned a variety of heeled footwear to walk a mile around the Abraham Baldwin Agricultural College (ABAC) campus, demonstrating solidarity with victims of domestic violence.

Community Engagement and Support

Local residents, along with members from various organizations including Tift Regional Medical Center, Tifton Fire and Police departments, and Tift County Schools, joined the event, which involved marching three laps around ABAC Circle. The event was organized by the nonprofit groups Ruth’s Cottage and Patticake House and served as a culmination of their month-long activities for Domestic Violence Awareness Month.

Executive Director of Ruth’s Cottage, Nancy Bryan, emphasized the importance of the event in promoting empathy and understanding towards those affected by domestic violence. “It’s meant to be an example of how people need to put themselves in the shoes of folks experiencing [domestic violence],” she explained. The walk aimed to communicate a serious message in a light-hearted atmosphere, encouraging participants to engage with the topic while having fun.

Record-Breaking Support

Participants approached the walk with enthusiasm, showcasing signs with messages against domestic violence and words of encouragement. Some individuals even attempted to run portions of the course, showcasing their dedication to the cause. Among the standout contributions was a team from Tift Regional Medical Center, which raised a remarkable $5,225 in donations prior to the event. Bryan expressed her heartfelt gratitude to the team, presenting them with a trophy in recognition of their exceptional efforts.

As the event concluded, Bryan reflected on the success of the campaign, expressing hope that it would grow even larger in the coming years. She acknowledged the community’s support as a validation of their efforts to raise awareness and advocate for victims of domestic violence. The walk not only highlighted a pressing social issue but also fostered a sense of unity and commitment among participants.

The Walk A Mile in Her Shoes campaign serves as a reminder of the importance of community involvement in addressing social issues. Through engaging events like this, Tifton continues to shine a light on the challenges faced by victims of domestic violence, encouraging understanding and support for those in need.
