Genesee County Sheriff’s Office Waives PPO Fees for Victims
In a significant initiative aimed at aiding domestic violence victims, the Genesee County Sheriff’s Office has announced that it will cover the service fees associated with personal protection orders (PPOs) for individuals facing financial difficulties. Sheriff Chris Swanson made this announcement, emphasizing that the cost of obtaining a PPO should never prevent someone from seeking safety from domestic violence.
Starting immediately, this program allows victims who are unable to afford PPO service fees to receive assistance. Sheriff Swanson stated, “The cost to have a PPO served should never be a barrier to keeping a person safe from a domestic situation.” This proactive intervention comes as legislative efforts are underway to eliminate such fees across the state, which can often take time to be enacted.
Victims needing assistance can visit the Sheriff’s Office located on South Saginaw Street. There, they can speak with a deputy or detective who will help serve the PPO. Sheriff Swanson reinforced the importance of this service, declaring, “Effective immediately, if you have a PPO that’s been authorized by the court and you do not have the financial means to pay for that service, you just can’t afford it, do not let that stop you.”
The recent state budget signed by Governor Gretchen Whitmer has allocated $162.3 million for crime victim services, which includes funding for domestic violence prevention and support initiatives. This financial backing underscores the state’s commitment to improving the safety and support available to survivors of domestic violence.
Immediate Support for Victims
Sheriff Swanson’s announcement highlights a critical shift in how domestic violence cases are handled in Genesee County. By waiving the service fees, the Sheriff’s Office not only addresses immediate needs but also sets a precedent for potential statewide reform. In a video shared on social media, Swanson asserted, “We will protect you and we won’t let finances be a barrier.”
Individuals seeking information on how to acquire a PPO in Genesee County can contact the personal protection order office directly. In cases of emergency, victims are urged to call 911 or reach out to the YWCA crisis line, which operates 24 hours a day, providing essential support to those in crisis.
This initiative reflects a growing recognition of the barriers that financial constraints can impose on victims of domestic violence. By prioritizing access to protective measures without the burden of fees, the Genesee County Sheriff’s Office is taking a significant step towards ensuring that safety and support are accessible to all who need it.
