Tifton Community Steps Up for Domestic Violence Awareness

On October 23, 2025, the Tifton community united for the annual Walk A Mile in Her Shoes event, a campaign aimed at raising awareness for domestic violence. Participants from various local organizations, including the Abraham Baldwin Agricultural College (ABAC) and Tift County Schools, donned heels to walk a mile, symbolizing empathy and support for victims of domestic abuse.

The event, organized by the nonprofit groups Ruth’s Cottage and Patticake House, served as the culmination of a month-long campaign in observance of Domestic Violence Awareness Month. Participants marched along ABAC Circle, completing three laps around the loop, which totaled approximately one mile, in various styles of heeled footwear.

Nancy Bryan, executive director of Ruth’s Cottage, emphasized the event’s dual purpose. While many activities throughout October focused on the serious implications of domestic violence, the walk provided a light-hearted yet impactful conclusion to the campaign. “It’s meant to be an example of how people need to put themselves in the shoes of folks experiencing [domestic violence], have some empathy and education on it,” Bryan stated.

Participants approached the course with enthusiasm, some carrying signs that promoted messages of positivity and protest against domestic violence. A few adventurous individuals even attempted to run portions of the course, showcasing their commitment to the cause.

Local organizations rallied together for this event, including Tift Regional Medical Center, the Tifton Fire and Police Departments, and members of the ABAC Alpha Gamma Rho fraternity. The Tift Regional team notably raised a remarkable $5,225 in donations leading up to the event, an achievement that Bryan recognized with a trophy in appreciation of their support.

As the event concluded, Bryan expressed hope for the future growth of the initiative. She acknowledged the existing support from the community, which she believes has validated their efforts to raise awareness for domestic violence. The positive turnout demonstrated a collective commitment to addressing an issue that continues to affect many individuals and families.

With aspirations to expand next year’s event, the Tifton community’s response to this year’s Walk A Mile in Her Shoes reflects a growing understanding and advocacy for victims of domestic violence. The event not only served to raise funds but also fostered a sense of solidarity and empathy among participants.
