Community Mourns Loss of Arlene Antonovich Harrison at 89

Arlene Beth Antonovich Harrison, a cherished member of the San Pedro community, passed away peacefully at the age of 89. Her death marks the loss of not only a beloved mother but also a passionate environmental activist and an advocate for her Croatian heritage, as reflected through her family’s deep fishing roots.

Born into a family of fishermen, Arlene was the daughter of Carl Antonovich, who dedicated his life to tuna fishing, and the granddaughter of John Antonovich, who immigrated from Korcula, Croatia, in 1907. Arlene’s commitment to her heritage was evident in her daily life and her love for the ocean, which she instilled in her four sons.

A Life Dedicated to Family and Art

Arlene, affectionately known as Nene to family and friends, was an accomplished artist and a talented chef. Her artistic pursuits flourished as a member of the San Pedro Art Association, where she enjoyed oil painting coastal landscapes from her beach house overlooking the ocean. Those who dined at her home were often treated to her renowned seafood dishes, with hobotnica (octopus salad) being a particular favorite among guests.

The beach was a significant part of Arlene’s life, especially Cabrillo Beach, where she taught her sons to swim. This love for the ocean extended to summers spent on Catalina Island, where she created lasting memories with family, fostering traditions that would be cherished for generations.

Arlene’s home on Bluff Place became a gathering spot for countless family celebrations, including festive Fourth of July fireworks, Christmas Eve seafood feasts, and various birthdays. Her warmth and hospitality made her a beloved figure among friends and family alike, as she treated her sons’ friends as if they were her own.

Legacy and Celebration of Life

Arlene is survived by her sons: Robb Heberer (Debbe), Craig Heberer (Teresa), Karl Heberer (Julie), and Chris Heberer (Maria), along with numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren, all of whom carry forward her legacy. Her family also includes stepsons Chris Harrison and Brian Harrison (Felicity), and their children.

A private Celebration of Life is being organized to honor her memory, as per her wishes. In lieu of flowers, the family encourages donations to be made to the San Pedro Boys and Girls Club, a place where her sons spent many afternoons engaging in sports and activities, or the San Pedro Art Association, reflecting Arlene’s artistic passions.

As the San Pedro community mourns her passing, they remember Arlene Antonovich Harrison not just for her contributions to family and art, but for the love and laughter she shared with all who knew her.
