Albert Pujols Eyes Full-Time Manager Role Ahead of Classic

Albert Pujols is set to manage the Dominican Republic team in the upcoming World Baseball Classic in March 2023, marking another step in his journey toward a full-time managerial role. The former MLB star, who enjoyed a prolific playing career spanning 22 seasons, is eager to embrace the challenges of leadership on the field.

Pujols previously experienced managing last winter when he guided Escogido to the championship in the Dominican winter league. His passion for baseball remains strong, as he expressed, “Baseball is my passion. That is what I love. I love to teach and be around the guys.” With his extensive background in the sport, Pujols is ready to take on the responsibilities that come with managing at a high level.

This offseason, several Major League Baseball teams recognized Pujols’ aspirations, leading him to interview for openings with the Baltimore Orioles, Los Angeles Angels, and San Diego Padres. While he was not hired, Pujols described the experience as enlightening. “I enjoyed it,” he stated, highlighting how teams were interested in understanding his background and approach to the game. Pujols noted that the interview process spanned 19 hours, combining both Zoom sessions and in-person meetings, which provided him with valuable insights into various franchises.

Pujols’ credentials as a player are exceptional. He ranks fourth in MLB history with 703 home runs and is second in runs batted in with 2,218 RBIs. His total of 3,384 hits places him tenth on the all-time list. Nevertheless, his interest in management has been a long-standing ambition, influenced by his experiences under notable managers like Tony La Russa, Mike Scioscia, Dave Roberts, and Oliver Marmol.

Leading a team during the Caribbean Series last winter further intensified Pujols’ desire to manage. He had the opportunity to mentor emerging talents, including Junior Caminero, a rising star with the Tampa Bay Rays. “I think you always have to be planning ahead,” Pujols explained, indicating his forward-thinking mindset. He had previously taken a break from baseball, opting to step away from the field, but now he feels prepared to return in a managerial capacity.

In addition to his baseball pursuits, Pujols continues to channel his competitive spirit into golf. He is scheduled to participate in the celebrity portion of the Hilton Grand Vacations Tournament of Champions, which kicks off the LPGA 2026 tour at the Lake Nona Golf & Country Club in Orlando. Pujols reflected on the challenge of transitioning from baseball to golf, stating, “I think a lot of people would say hitting a baseball is a lot harder than hitting a golf ball. I would say the opposite. Hitting a golf ball, to me, just sitting there, is tough. You have too much time to think.”

Pujols’ journey from player to potential manager highlights his enduring passion for baseball and his commitment to shaping the next generation of talent. As he prepares for the World Baseball Classic, fans and teams alike will be watching closely to see how he navigates this new chapter in his illustrious career.
