Detroit Lakes Girls Hockey Team Dominates with Two Victories

The Detroit Lakes girls hockey team enjoyed a productive week, securing two impressive victories alongside one narrow defeat. The Lakers began their week on December 2, 2023, facing off against Northern Lakes, where they initially took a strong lead but ultimately fell short with a final score of 6-4.

In the match against Northern Lakes, Detroit Lakes established a commanding 3-0 lead by the end of the first period. The team scored again early in the second period, bringing their lead to 4-0. However, Northern Lakes retaliated fiercely, scoring four goals in the second period to tie the game. They sealed their comeback with two additional goals in the final period, leaving Detroit Lakes with a tough loss.

The Lakers rebounded swiftly on December 5, 2023, with a visit to the Bronco Arena. There, they faced International Falls and achieved an impressive 11-0 shutout victory, marking their most significant win of the season.

Hadley Songstad and Aurora Jabas led the charge against International Falls, each contributing multiple goals to the scoreboard. In addition to their efforts, Izzy Mariotti and Sophia Burnside also scored, demonstrating the team’s offensive strength. Goaltender Paityn Solberg showcased her skills by saving 39 of the 41 shots on goal, ensuring a clean slate for the Lakers.

Their successful week continued on December 6, 2023, when Detroit Lakes hosted Worthington in a home matinee. The Lakers skated away with a 6-2 victory, marking their second consecutive win and improving their overall record to 3-4. This performance further solidified their momentum following the shutout against International Falls.

In the match against Worthington, Detroit Lakes took control early, with Jabas scoring the first goal just 9:01 into the first period. Songstad added to the tally with a power play goal at 11:35, followed by another from Mariotti at 13:55. The Lakers continued to dominate, with Songstad scoring again at 2:03 in the second period, increasing their lead to 4-0. Worthington managed to score at 7:08, but Jabas responded quickly, netting her second goal at 7:39.

As the game progressed into the third period, Burnside scored at 5:32, and despite Worthington’s second goal at 13:11, Detroit Lakes maintained control and secured the 6-2 win.
