Former NFL Star Doug Martin Dies in Police Custody After Incident
Doug Martin, a former All-Pro running back for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, died in police custody in Oakland, California, early on Saturday, March 30, 2024. The Oakland Police Department (OPD) confirmed the incident on Monday, stating that officers responded to a reported break-in shortly after 4:15 a.m.
According to the OPD, Martin was involved in a break-in at a residence when officers arrived on the scene. The department’s press statement noted that a brief struggle occurred as the officers attempted to detain him. After being taken into custody, Martin became unresponsive. Paramedics provided immediate medical assistance before transporting him to a local hospital, where he was pronounced dead. He was 36 years old.
Investigation Underway Following Incident
In the wake of Martin’s death, his family issued a statement expressing their sorrow. “It is with great sadness to inform you all that Doug Martin passed away Saturday morning. Cause of death is currently unconfirmed. Please respect our privacy at this time,” the statement read.
The OPD has initiated an investigation into the in-custody death, following standard department policy. This inquiry involves the Homicide Section, OPD Internal Affairs Bureau, the Oakland City Police Commission, the Community Police Review Agency, and the Alameda County District Attorney’s Office.
Martin’s Legacy in the NFL
During his NFL career, Martin gained recognition not only for his performance but also for his unique playing style. Standing at just 5-foot-9, he was known for his powerful running, earning him the nickname “Muscle Hamster.” Over his career, he amassed 5,356 rushing yards and scored 30 touchdowns.
Martin was drafted by the Buccaneers as the 31st overall pick in the first round of the 2012 NFL Draft after a standout collegiate career at Boise State. He burst onto the professional scene, rushing for 1,454 yards and 11 touchdowns in his rookie season, which earned him a Pro Bowl selection. At that time, he recorded the third-most yards from scrimmage for a rookie in NFL history, trailing only legends Eric Dickerson and Edgerrin James.
His most notable season came in 2015 when he achieved All-Pro status, rushing for 1,402 yards and six touchdowns, while also contributing with 33 receptions for 271 yards and another touchdown. Martin continued to play for two more seasons with the Buccaneers before concluding his career in 2018 with the Las Vegas Raiders.
Martin’s impact on the Buccaneers franchise was significant, with the team honoring him as one of the top 50 players in its history during its 50th-anniversary celebration. As a California native, he also made a lasting impression at Boise State, where he ranks in the top ten for career rushing yards and rushing touchdowns, having received first-team All-Conference honors twice.
As investigations continue into the circumstances surrounding his death, the sports world remembers Doug Martin not only for his athletic achievements but also for the tragic end to his life.
