Gerrit Cole Updates Yankees on Recovery Timeline for 2025 Return

The New York Yankees are eager for the return of their ace pitcher, Gerrit Cole, who recently provided an update on his recovery from Tommy John surgery. Cole threw his first bullpen session of spring training, confirming that his timeline for a return remains unchanged. In a video shared on social media by Yankees Videos, he discussed his rehabilitation progress and future plans with the team and Dr. Neal ElAttrache.

Cole underwent Tommy John surgery on March 11, 2024, after experiencing elbow issues during spring training. The procedure has kept him sidelined for the entire 2025 season, as he has been diligently working through a lengthy rehabilitation process. He stated, “We’ve had a lot of discussions between myself, the Yankees, and Dr. ElAttrache. With a full Tommy John reconstruction, the target’s always between 14 and 18 months. That really hasn’t changed.”

His last competitive appearance came during the 2024 World Series, where he recorded a commendable 0.71 ERA in two starts but could not prevent the Yankees from losing the series to the Los Angeles Dodgers. The absence of Cole significantly impacted the Yankees’ pitching rotation, which struggled throughout the season and ultimately faced a Division Series loss to Toronto.

As Cole progresses in his recovery, he has followed the prescribed rehabilitation program without rushing the process. He expressed that his surgically repaired elbow feels better than it has in a long time and noted the positive difference compared to the lingering problems he faced prior to surgery.

Yankees manager Aaron Boone mentioned that Cole may have the opportunity to pitch in exhibition games before the conclusion of spring training. The team is focused on not hurrying his return, with a target date set for late May or early June for regular season play. This cautious approach reflects the team’s desire to ensure Cole is fully prepared to contribute to their playoff aspirations.

In addition to his recovery, Cole has arrived at camp with a new look, sporting a beard and a modified windup that positions his hands over his head. These adjustments are part of his preparation to join a rotation that will include Max Fried at the top, highlighting the importance of Cole’s presence as the Yankees aim for a successful season.
