Journey from Iowa Farm to Big Ten Sidelines: Jacob Laverman’s Rise

Jacob Laverman’s ascent from a farm in Ocheyedan, Iowa, to becoming the Director of Football Rehabilitation at Indiana University is a testament to hard work and perseverance. His journey through college football and professional athletics has been marked by key decisions, influential mentors, and a steadfast commitment to his passion for sports medicine.

Growing up in a farming family, Laverman learned early on that hard work was essential. After high school, he faced uncertainty about his future. The opportunity at Minnesota West Community & Technical College provided a financially sensible option close to home, allowing him to explore various academic and athletic interests without the burden of significant debt. “I probably wouldn’t admit this to my parents, but I submitted my Minnesota West application on the very last day it was due—and somehow, everything fell into place just as it was meant to,” he reflected.

At Minnesota West, Laverman pursued an Associate of Arts degree while engaging in sports, including one year of golf and two years of baseball. The college’s small class sizes and approachable professors created a supportive environment. His interest in sports medicine was sparked in classes taught by mentors like Joel Krekelberg, who opened doors to new possibilities.

Laverman noted, “My first college experience had the support systems in place and made it easy to succeed.” He felt prepared when the time came to transfer to a four-year university, ultimately choosing Iowa State University for its esteemed Athletic Training program. His decision was backed by the strong alumni network that could aid in his future career.

During his time at Iowa State, Laverman gained invaluable experience working with college football teams. In 2012, he took a bold step by applying for summer internships with all 32 NFL teams. His efforts paid off when the Indianapolis Colts called and offered him a position, largely due to the connections he made at Iowa State. This role was further solidified when he secured a position with the Seattle Seahawks in 2016.

Experiences at the Colts, particularly under the mentorship of Erin Barill, the Director of Rehabilitation, deepened Laverman’s interest in pursuing a Doctor of Physical Therapy degree. Inspired by Barill and guided by his advisor Mary Meier, he applied to Washington University in St. Louis, a leading PT program, and was accepted.

As graduation approached, Laverman returned to the Colts in a seasonal role as a physical therapist and athletic trainer in 2018, where he gained crucial experience in high-level football rehabilitation. This pivotal role paved the way for his current position at Indiana University, where he has been instrumental in supporting athletes in their recovery and performance for seven seasons.

“Take time to look at your options—what’s out there and what it’ll cost—and talk to trusted advisors,” Laverman advises. He emphasizes the importance of building relationships and remaining open-minded, as unexpected connections can lead to significant opportunities.

Laverman’s agricultural upbringing instilled in him a work ethic that has been essential in his demanding profession. “This job is fast-paced and high-pressure, demanding a high level of skill and focus. You have to consistently perform at your best,” he stated.

His contributions to the field are not measured by accolades but rather the behind-the-scenes moments that define success in sports. He has worked with elite quarterbacks, including Andrew Luck and Russell Wilson, and currently supports players like Fernando Mendoza, whom he praises for his professionalism and dedication.

The culmination of Laverman’s journey came in March 2025, when Indiana University won the Big Ten Championship at Lucas Oil Stadium. Celebrating on the field with family encapsulated his journey—one characterized by support and shared success with those who helped him along the way.

From his roots in Iowa to being featured on a marketing billboard for Minnesota West, Laverman’s story exemplifies the importance of hard work, mentorship, and resilience in achieving one’s dreams. He continues to foster connections and seeks to give back, aspiring to guide the next generation of sports medicine professionals as they navigate their own paths.
