A significant women’s basketball clash on March 3, 2024, saw the No. 13 ranked MidAmerica Nazarene University (MNU) triumph over No. 9 Dakota Wesleyan University (DWU) with a score of 62-39. The game took place at the Cattle Classic hosted by Concordia University in Seward, Nebraska.
Despite a competitive first half, where DWU trailed by just four points at halftime, the game shifted dramatically in the final quarter. DWU managed only seven points in the last ten minutes, while MNU outscored them 24-7 during that span.
MNU’s advantage was underscored by their superior performance at the free-throw line, converting 15 attempts compared to just four for DWU. Additionally, MNU showed remarkable ball control, committing only nine turnovers in contrast to DWU’s 20.
The shooting struggles for DWU were evident, as they finished the game with a field goal percentage of just 27.1%. The team’s shooting woes were particularly pronounced in the second half, where they made only 4-of-14 shots in the third quarter and a dismal 3-of-16 in the fourth.
Emma Yost led the Tigers’ scoring efforts with 11 points, the only player from DWU to reach double figures. Rylee Rosenquist contributed seven points and seven rebounds, while both Shalayne Nagel and Jaida Young added seven points. Notably, Avery Broughton also made her mark by grabbing eight rebounds.
On the opposing team, MNU’s performance was highlighted by Grace Carlson, who scored 18 points, supported by Mary Lukert with 14 points and Zaylee Werth who added 11 points. With this victory, MNU improved their season record to 3-0.
Looking ahead, DWU, now at 1-1, is set to face 18th-ranked Arizona Christian on March 4, 2024, at 10:00 a.m. to conclude their participation in the Cattle Classic. This upcoming game presents an opportunity for DWU to rebound from their recent performance and regain momentum in the season.
