Romeo Bulldogs Capture Sixth Straight District Wrestling Title

The Romeo Bulldogs clinched their sixth consecutive Division 1 district title on February 11, 2026, with an impressive performance at Rochester Stoney Creek. The team dominated both Utica and Utica Eisenhower, winning their semifinal match against Utica 67-9, followed by a decisive 65-17 victory over Eisenhower in the finals.

Thomas Jaynes, a key member of the Bulldogs, reflected on the team’s journey over the past few years. In his freshman year, the Bulldogs reached the Division 1 Final Four, while subsequent seasons saw them fall in the regional finals and state quarterfinals. This year, the team is poised to make a strong run, bolstered by a senior group that has never experienced defeat at the district level.

Romeo’s triumph comes as they improve their season record to 28-10. The Bulldogs showcased their strength against Eisenhower, where they achieved 11 victories, including ten by pinfall and one by technical fall, accumulating a total score of 132-26 across both dual meets.

Strategic Moves Lead to Victory

Head coach James Cali praised his team’s resilience, noting, “The score was 18-17 after a handful of matches. It was close, and Eisenhower has some really good wrestlers. But I thought we responded well.” Romeo took an early lead with three consecutive pins from wrestlers Colton Skurda (144 pounds), Anthony Yuquilima (150 pounds), and Owen Perry (157 pounds). After Eisenhower briefly narrowed the gap, the Bulldogs surged ahead, winning all remaining matches.

Jaynes, competing at 215 pounds, and several others moved up a weight class, a strategy that proved effective. The Bulldogs’ victories continued with pins from Rashaad Hardman (285 pounds), Aaron Moskwa (106 pounds), Nathan Pugh (113 pounds), Nico Adamo (120 pounds), Eric Miller (126 pounds), Noah Bonett (132 pounds), and Valentino Adamo (138 pounds). These efforts left Eisenhower unable to respond further after their initial success.

Looking Ahead to Regionals

With their district title secured, the Bulldogs will compete in the regional semifinals next Wednesday. The specific time and location will be announced later. The victory marks a significant milestone for the team, reflecting the dedication and hard work that has characterized their recent seasons.

In contrast, the season came to an end for both Eisenhower and Rochester Stoney Creek, who must now shift their focus to the MHSAA Individual State Tournament. Stoney Creek coach Aidan Pierobon noted the challenges faced by his young team, with many competitors still in their freshman and sophomore years.

As the Bulldogs prepare for the next challenge, there is a palpable sense of optimism within the team. Jaynes stated, “This year we have a really good team again and I think we have what it takes to get back to the state tournament.” With a mix of experienced wrestlers and promising newcomers, Romeo’s wrestling program continues to build on its legacy of success.
