Union’s Newcomers Shine in Preseason Scrimmage Against Sigma Olomouc

The Philadelphia Union showcased promising performances from new signings Ezekiel Alladoh and Japhet Sery Larsen during their preseason scrimmage against Czech club SK Sigma Olomouc, which ended in a 1-1 draw. Coach Bradley Carnell expressed satisfaction with the integration of the newcomers, highlighting their contributions to the squad.

The match took place in Marbella, Spain, on January 30, 2024, just two days after the team arrived for their preseason camp. This scrimmage marked an essential opportunity for Larsen, a centerback who played the first half alongside Olwethu Makhanya, the Union’s anticipated defensive pairing. The duo faced additional challenges as Carnell opted to start reserve team prospect Giovanny Sequera at right back and Ben Bender at left back.

Carnell noted that both Alladoh and Larsen adapted well to the team’s style. “I think both of them have integrated seamlessly in all sides of the game with us,” he stated during a news conference on February 1, 2024. He commended Alladoh for displaying his qualities on the field, emphasizing his speed and hold-up play, which could become vital assets as the season progresses.

Larsen, at 25, is the oldest centerback on the Union’s roster. Carnell praised him for his calm demeanor and professional approach, suggesting that he is already developing leadership skills within the team. “I think he’s already establishing some form of foundational leadership capabilities here as well,” Carnell remarked.

In addition to the new signings, the Union recognized the efforts of reserve team striker Stas Korzeniowski, promoting him to the first team following his impressive performances with Union II last year and during the preseason. Korzeniowski scored the team’s goal in the scrimmage, showcasing his potential as a valuable asset moving forward. “Stas has certain qualities and a skill set that we really like,” Carnell explained, acknowledging that while his abilities are still developing, he is on the right path.

The Union also announced the loan of 18-year-old centerback Neil Pierre to Lyngby in Denmark’s second division. This loan represents a significant step for Pierre, who is viewed as a marquee prospect but not yet ready for the top-flight competition in MLS. Carnell explained the importance of this move, stating, “Very important for Neil to go and get those experiences, and I think he’ll grow as a person and as a player as well.”

The loan agreement is set to last until June, meaning Pierre will not be available for selection until the season resumes in mid-July. It is anticipated that he may feature in the Leagues Cup later in the summer, providing him with further competitive experience.

Meanwhile, excitement continues to build around 16-year-old striker Malik Jakupovic, who was named to the United States squad for the upcoming Concacaf U-17 World Cup qualifiers. Carnell acknowledged Jakupovic’s potential, recalling glimpses of his talent during training, but also emphasized the need to allow the young player to develop without excessive pressure. “We want him to have fun, we want him to develop, we want him to learn and grow,” Carnell stated.

As the Union heads into their next scrimmage against Danish club Nordsjælland on February 3, 2024, at 8 a.m. Philadelphia time, they will look to build on the positive signs exhibited in their initial preseason match while continuing to refine their roster ahead of the new season.

In broader league news, Major League Soccer has announced changes to its internal regulations, allowing teams to sell players for cash rather than allocation money, eliminating the previous cap of two sales per team per season. This shift is expected to align the league’s practices with international standards, enhancing the market’s overall fluidity.

Additionally, MLS has updated its transfer windows; the winter window will now run from January 26 to March 26, while the summer window will take place from July 13 to September 2. These changes aim to synchronize MLS operations with other major leagues worldwide, potentially improving the league’s competitive edge.
