The John D. Spreckels Center is expanding its fitness offerings by introducing Zumba Gold classes on Saturday mornings at 10 a.m. Located at 1019 7th Street, these low-impact dance fitness sessions will be led by certified instructor Marg Stark. The new schedule aims to accommodate individuals of all ages, particularly those balancing work commitments, while providing an engaging way to kick off the weekend.
Zumba Gold is designed to be easier on the joints compared to regular Zumba, eliminating pivots and jumps while maintaining the enjoyment of Latin and pop music. Stark describes the class as “exercise in disguise,” emphasizing that participants can enjoy the atmosphere of a club without the late nights or travel.
Research indicates that group dance classes, such as Zumba Gold, offer significant health benefits. Stark notes that the combination of cardio workouts, cognitive engagement from following the choreography, and the social aspect of dancing with a community contributes to various health improvements. These include weight loss, reduced risks of dementia and heart disease, enhanced mood, and decreased fall risk.
In addition to fitness, the class fosters a sense of community. Participants often gather for special occasions and engage in flash mob performances throughout the town. Last year, alongside Sue Allen Villalva‘s Zumba class, the group showcased their talent at the Coronado Film Festival during a beach screening of “Mamma Mia,” as well as at Main Street’s “Small Business Saturday” events.
Participants are encouraged to wear sneakers and bring a water bottle to class. The drop-in fee is $17, but registering for the monthly session reduces the cost to $12 per class for residents of Coronado. Those interested can register for Saturday classes and also benefit from an additional discount for attending both Tuesday and Saturday sessions.
Stark, who resides in Imperial Beach after a decade in Coronado, is eager to share her passion for dance and fitness. For more information or inquiries, individuals can reach out to Marg Stark at [email protected].
The introduction of Zumba Gold classes at the Spreckels Center marks a significant step in promoting health and fitness within the community, providing an accessible and enjoyable way for residents to stay active.
