Anchorage Breaks January Snow Record; Schools Dismiss Early

UPDATE: Anchorage has shattered its January snowfall record as heavy snow continues to fall, prompting the Anchorage School District to dismiss all students two hours early today, January 30, 2023. The city has already received an astonishing 36.4 inches of snow this month, surpassing the previous record set in 2000, according to the National Weather Service (NWS).

The winter storm began on Monday and has dumped 4 to 6 inches of fresh snow across Anchorage by Tuesday morning. A winter weather advisory remains in effect until at least 9 p.m. today, with officials cautioning that driving conditions are perilous, especially during the evening commute.

Authorities report that the Anchorage Police Department has responded to 39 vehicles in distress and nine minor collisions, thankfully with no injuries. Police spokesman Adam Nicely emphasized the importance of caution: “It’s important for Anchorage residents to remember that it is winter, and the snowfall is expected to continue.”

City crews are working around the clock to clear main roads before moving to residential areas. Kenny Friendly, a spokesperson for the city’s plowing operations, stated that clearing all major thoroughfares could take up to 12 hours after the snow stops. Friendly urged residents to be patient as plowing crews tackle the challenging conditions.

The current weather is unusual for Anchorage; typically, January is not the snowiest month. Climatologist Brian Brettschneider explained that rising temperatures have altered snowfall patterns, making January snowier than in the past. “January has warmed five or six degrees, that limitation really is no longer in effect,” he said.

In addition to record snow, Anchorage has received a remarkable 2.76 inches of liquid equivalent precipitation this month, setting another new record. “If we don’t get any precipitation for the next 16 days, it will still be our wettest start to a year,” Brettschneider noted.

With the storm still ongoing, more snow accumulation is possible before the month ends. Forecasts indicate that while today’s snowfall may taper off, the potential for more accumulation looms.

Residents are advised to stay updated on conditions and school closures as the situation develops. The city continues to monitor the storm’s impact and will provide further updates as necessary.

Stay safe and informed, Anchorage!
