Apple Unveils Major Photo Backup Update for iOS 26.1 Users
URGENT UPDATE: Apple has just announced a groundbreaking change for iPhone users with the upcoming release of iOS 26.1, allowing third-party apps to back up photos automatically in the background. This long-requested feature, first reported by 9to5Mac, will significantly enhance the photo backup experience on popular platforms like Google Photos and OneDrive.
Until now, apps such as Google Photos and OneDrive faced strict limitations on iOS, only able to upload images when actively running, causing user frustration with incomplete backups. This update, set to transform how users manage their photo libraries, will allow these apps to upload images even when the device is locked or another app is in use.
The new functionality is powered by Apple’s PhotoKit, introducing a “Background Resource Upload” extension. This system-managed process will enable seamless uploads without requiring the app to remain open, a huge boost for user convenience. Apple has indicated that the framework will manage uploads intelligently, controlling power consumption and network access for optimal efficiency.
Developers will need to integrate this new extension by creating and configuring an extension target, processing upload jobs, and handling user consent where necessary. This streamlined process means users will enjoy a more efficient experience akin to iCloud Photos, eliminating the need to keep apps open for extended periods.
This move also appears strategic, potentially aimed at reducing antitrust scrutiny amid ongoing debates about app store practices. Apple noted that the framework is still in beta and may evolve before the public release of iOS 26.1.
With this significant update, iPhone users can anticipate a smoother experience in backing up their cherished photos. Stay tuned for further developments as Apple prepares for the official launch.
