The reboot, directed by acclaimed filmmaker Joseph Kosinski of Top Gun: Maverick fame, aims to breathe new life into the franchise that originally aired on NBC from 1984 to 1990. The movie is currently scheduled to begin production in 2026 and is projected to hit theaters on August 6, 2027.
Butler is expected to portray the character James “Sonny” Crockett, a role made famous by Don Johnson in the original series and later by Colin Farrell in the 2006 film adaptation. Meanwhile, Jordan is reportedly in talks to take on the role of Ricardo “Rico” Tubbs, originally played by Philip Michael Thomas and later by Jamie Foxx.
