UPDATE: The Battle Mountain basketball teams are off to a competitive start, both holding a 2-2 record as of December 12, 2025. The boys and girls teams faced intense matchups this week, with thrilling outcomes that have fans eager for more.
In a dramatic comeback, the Battle Mountain girls rallied from a 9-point halftime deficit to secure a 39-36 victory against Soroco on Saturday. Ruthie Casey led the charge with 15 points, supported by teammates Amelia Wansley and Kate Kovacik, who each contributed 10 points. However, the Huskies faced a setback in their next game against Rifle, where they fell 45-37. Izzy Kovacik stood out with 17 points while Casey added 16 points, leaving the team hungry for redemption.
The boys’ team also experienced a rollercoaster week, starting with a tough 76-50 loss to Coal Ridge. The Huskies bounced back with a strong showing against Lake County, winning 60-47, followed by another victory against DSST: Cedar 58-47. Yet, they could not maintain the momentum, losing again to Rifle 54-44 on Tuesday. Jackson Wansley has been a key player, scoring double digits in all three games, with 10, 14, and 15 points respectively.
Looking ahead, Battle Mountain’s girls will face Middle Park at home on Thursday night, a critical game that could shift their momentum. Fans are eagerly anticipating how both teams will adjust and respond to these early season challenges.
Meanwhile, the Eagle Valley boys’ basketball team is enjoying a strong start, boasting a 5-1 record. Fresh off their success in last year’s 5A state playoffs, they opened the season with three consecutive victories before a loss to Rampart 71-44 on December 11. The Devils rebounded with a commanding 20-point win over Caprock Academy, with sophomore Daniel Anderson leading the team with 19 points.
The Eagle Valley girls’ team, however, faces challenges with a 2-4 record, despite key wins against Weld Central and Steamboat Springs. Freshman Hannah Miano and senior Ella Webster are emerging as standouts, averaging 11.7 and 10.2 points per game, respectively. They will look to improve their record in upcoming games against Grand Junction and Moffat County.
As both Battle Mountain and Eagle Valley basketball teams continue their seasons, fan support remains crucial.
