UPDATE: Bemidji Fire Chief Justin Sherwood has been honored with the prestigious 2025 Leadership Award from the Minnesota State Fire Chiefs Association (MSFCA). The award was presented during the annual conference held in Duluth from October 15-18, 2023, highlighting Sherwood’s exceptional contributions to the fire service.
The MSFCA recognizes individuals who have “gone the extra mile” to support the fire service. Under Sherwood’s leadership, the Bemidji Fire Department has significantly improved in capacity, morale, and readiness. A post on the department’s Facebook page emphasized, “Chief Sherwood’s vision for accountability, continuous improvement, and community partnership reflects the very criteria of the award: leadership, innovation, and major contributions to the fire service.”
Sherwood, who has been serving as fire chief since 2021, began his career with the department in 2002 as a residential dorm firefighter. His commitment to the fire service extends beyond local responsibilities; MSFCA President Eric Bullen commended him for advocating at both state and national levels. Earlier this year, Sherwood received a scholarship that allowed him to attend the Congressional Fire Services Institute Symposium in Washington, D.C., where he effectively advocated for greater Minnesota.
Bullen highlighted Sherwood’s quick response following the devastating storm on June 21, which overwhelmed local emergency services. He stated, “Chief Sherwood went to work and led his department in responding to an overwhelming call volume in the initial hours after the storm.” Recognizing the urgent situation, Sherwood contacted the State Fire Marshal Division and the MSFCA to activate the Intrastate Mutual Aid Plan, enabling assistance from fire departments across the state.
The Bemidji Fire Department expressed pride in having such an exceptional leader. Their Facebook post stated, “When our chief leads well, our entire community benefits.” This recognition not only honors Sherwood’s achievements but also reinforces the importance of effective leadership in emergency services.
As the community of Bemidji celebrates this significant accolade, the fire department continues to enhance its readiness and commitment to serving the public. With Sherwood at the helm, residents can feel assured of a proactive and responsive fire service ready to handle any challenge.
