CSU Rams Fire Coach Jay Norvell, Interim Leadership Announced
URGENT UPDATE: Colorado State University (CSU) has just fired head football coach Jay Norvell following a disappointing 31-19 loss to Hawaii, leaving the Rams with a 2-5 season record. The announcement was made during a press conference on October 30, 2023, by CSU’s athletic director John Weber, who emphasized the need for a change in leadership as the team prepares for upcoming challenges.
Weber stated, “Today is about moving forward,” signaling a new direction for the Rams as they look to regain momentum in the Mountain West Conference. Norvell’s tenure ended after less than four seasons, with a lackluster record of 18-26. His dismissal follows a series of struggles that culminated in the team’s latest defeat, which Weber described as a critical moment for the program.
In the wake of Norvell’s departure, defensive coordinator Tyson Summers has been appointed as interim head coach for the remainder of the season. Summers joined the CSU staff last December and has previously served as head coach at Georgia Southern and as a defensive coordinator at notable programs, including Georgia and Colorado.
The Rams are set to face Wyoming in the Border War game this Saturday, followed by a bye week before hosting UNLV on November 8. “This change allows us to focus on what the future of Colorado State should be,” Weber said, reiterating the urgency of establishing a strong recruiting presence moving forward.
Summers expressed his eagerness to lead the team, stating, “I’m thrilled for the opportunity to lead and for the opportunity to serve and help these young men as best I can.” He plans to maintain his role as defensive play caller while handing over offensive responsibilities to tight ends coach Grant Chestnut.
As the Rams navigate the final five games of the season, Summers remains optimistic. “We’ve got an opportunity to really do something special,” he noted, underscoring his commitment to enhance the team’s performance.
Looking ahead, CSU has initiated a national search for a new head coach, partnering with a premier search firm to identify the right individual to lead the program into its future, especially as it prepares to ascend into the Pac-12.
This is a developing story. Stay tuned for further updates.
