Deion Sanders’ Buffs Suffer Devastating 53-7 Loss to Utah
UPDATE: The Colorado Buffaloes faced a staggering defeat against the Utah Utes, losing 53-7 on Saturday night at Rice-Eccles Stadium in Salt Lake City. Coach Deion Sanders described the loss as “bad,” marking it as one of the most hopeless moments in his tenure.
This crushing defeat raises serious concerns for the Buffs, now standing at 3-5 overall and 1-4 in the Big 12. “You ain’t winning (with that),” Sanders declared, referring to Utah’s overwhelming performance that saw them accumulate 587 total yards and a staggering 422 rushing yards.
Sanders highlighted glaring issues in all phases of the game, stating, “All three phases, we got our butts kicked.” The Buffaloes managed only 140 total yards, their lowest since October 23, 2021. “You’re not winning,” he reiterated, emphasizing the lack of execution and preparation.
The loss was particularly painful as it marked the Buffs’ largest halftime deficit in over a decade, trailing 43-0 at the break. The team’s special teams were also under fire, giving up a fake punt and suffering a blocked punt. “It starts with me,” Sanders admitted, taking responsibility for the team’s performance.
“The way we practiced, the way we prepared, there’s no way that should have happened,” Sanders remarked, clearly frustrated by the team’s lack of competitive spirit.
Despite an encouraging 24-17 win against then-No. 22 Iowa State just two weeks prior, the Buffs entered this game looking unprepared. Quarterback Kaidon Salter, who had practiced well leading up to the game, struggled significantly, completing only 41% of his passes for 37 yards and being sacked five times.
Utah’s true freshman quarterback Byrd Ficklin stepped up in place of the injured Devon Dampier, contributing 291 total yards and three touchdowns. The Utes proved their dominance, showcasing their physicality against a Buffs team searching for identity.
With Arizona set to visit Boulder next Saturday, the urgency for the Buffs to regroup is paramount. “I’m pretty sure it wasn’t pleasant,” Sanders reflected on his message to the team post-game, emphasizing the need for immediate improvement.
This defeat not only stings but raises critical questions about the future direction of the Colorado program under Sanders. Fans and analysts will be watching closely as the team attempts to regain its footing in the coming weeks.
As the Buffaloes prepare for the upcoming matchup, Sanders is determined to address the issues head-on. “We gotta figure this out like now. Now,” he insisted, signaling that time is of the essence for the struggling program.
