UPDATE: A delivery truck collided with the overpass at Robinson Middle School on Thursday afternoon, causing cosmetic damage to the school’s exterior. The incident occurred at approximately 1:30 p.m., but fortunately, no injuries were reported among students or staff.
The accident, described as accidental by Robinson Middle School Principal Bridget Dowling, prompted immediate action from local authorities. Lowell Police Department responded swiftly to document the scene and assess the situation. The truck, which was delivering supplies from McAuliffe Elementary School, failed to clear the overpass, leading to the collision.
In a message to families, Principal Dowling assured that the impacted area was secured and that city engineers were called in to evaluate the structural integrity of the building. “Please know that student safety is always our top priority,” Dowling emphasized.
City Manager Tom Golden confirmed that this is not the first incident involving the overpass, noting that “that same spot has been hit previously.” He described the damage as superficial, likening it to the siding of a house, and confirmed that the steel I-beam supporting the overpass remained intact and structurally safe.
Classes continued as scheduled without interruption, ensuring that students remained in a secure environment. The incident has raised awareness about the overpass’s clearance issues, which have been a concern in the past, although it has not reached the notoriety of Lowell’s Spaghettiville Bridge, infamous for similar truck accidents.
As of now, the Lowell community is relieved that no injuries occurred, but officials are urging drivers to be more cautious in the area to prevent future incidents. Follow Aaron Curtis on X @aselahcurtis or on Bluesky @aaronscurtis.bsky.social for the latest updates on this developing story.
